So it finally happened. One of my boys, Malik this time, decided he would throw down in public today at CVS. He had gotten in trouble for fighting on the bus and just escalated from there. Pretty sure the people who pulled up beside us believed he had been kidnapped and called the cops because of the way he was losing it in the car pounding on the window trying to get attention . Then again while in the store he had to be restrained for his safety. People have no concept of what it’s like to parent a child with such challenges as these two have. So many nasty stares and rude comments. A couple people did check to see if we were ok but majority were outright disrespectful.
Do me and every other special needs parent a favor and keep your judgement to your self. Mind your damn business, unless you are going to actually be helpful. Remember you have no clue what these kids have been through and how far they have come.
I’m proud to have been able to handle one of our darker moments with calmness; proud to be able to keep both of us safe and the store and people around us out of harms way. He was able to do a breathing exercise on the floor of the CVS with me, with more than too many people watching our every move. He was mortified that he had to be carried out of the store, and that people saw him acting this way. Every moment is a teachable one and I feel like we both learned a lot tonight.
